Green Procurement

Categories: , Brand: Green Supplier

My mission is to promote green procurement whenever possible which will help in sustainable hotel development.

Introduction

Eco questions are addressed at tender stage. As part of the tender process , all potential suppliers  complete a commercial and technical questionnaire which includes specific reference to environmental issues eg  whether or not a supplier has an environmental policy. They are asked to read and agree to my procurement policies (more info).    They advise of   actions they have taken  over  the previous three years to improve the environment, both by themselves and their own suppliers. The Suppliers are advised that issues regarding the environment will be taken into account as part of the overall evaluation of tenders.

Local Suppliers

If all other factors are equal (price, quality, service etc), a local supplier may be chosen over a remote supplier as the reduced level of transport represents a positive environmental benefit.  As with all purchases, however, decisions must be made in accordance with the relevant EU procurement directives.

Utilities

Electricity

Utility costs affect profitability. Energy consumed to heat an empty room or light closed room blocks are direct hits to the bottom line.  Wasted energy is also a drain on the environment. Eco-friendly hotel technology can help reduce utility costs and conserve energy at the same time. Specifically, conservation technology deployed in minibars can help reduce costs up to 55% and at the same time ensure guest comfort. Low energy light bulbs make a significant reduction in energy consumption.

Facts.

  • Electricity accounts for up to 60% of hotel utility costs.
  • Guest lighting accounts for up to 40% of hotels electricity consumption.
  • An automated minibar can help control in-room utility usage adding up to savings of almost 55%.

Water

Hotel companies have both a strong commercial and moral imperative for addressing water use. Cost is a clear factor: water accounts for 10% of utility bills in many hotels. Most hotels pay for the water they consume twice – first by purchasing fresh water and then by disposing of it as waste water.   More information at greenhotelier.org
